Description

Tockay Hard Oil -Pure Solid- is used for interior wood such as floors, furniture, mouldings, doors, frames, toys, or countertops. It is also suitable for other surfaces such as cork, stone or terra-cotta and concrete in interiors. It is exclusively composed of natural oils and resins. It is applied with a flat brush, roller, or cloth. One to two coats are necessary depending on the quality of the surface and the application.

Application

When using the product, the complete product information must be observed.

SUITABLE SURFACE

Interior use only:

Wood: floors, furniture, moldings, doors, frames, toys, and countertops

Other surfaces: cork, stone or terra-cotta and concrete

Surface must be untreated, clean, dry, grease-free, chemically neutral and absorbent. Apply the oil at a minimum temperature of 10 °C. The moisture content of the wood must be < 15%.

RECOMMENDED TOOLS

– Brush / flat brush (e.g. spalter)

– Short-haired roller

– Lint-free cloths, synthetic sponges resistant to solvents

– For large surfaces: use a professional waxer for better penetration. Do not apply oil with a surface scraper.

 PRELIMINARY TEST

It is recommended to test the product on an inconspicuous part of the surface to evaluate the color change of the substrate and to check for other possible reactions.

APPLICATION

Stir the oil briefly before use.  Application in 2 coats. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second. If necessary, sand the wood before the second coat. If using several jars with different batch numbers, mix them together before application. Do not pour the hard oil directly onto the substrate. Clean and dust untreated surfaces.

1- Initial sanding:

Sand the wood (120-180 grain), round off the edges and remove dust. Do not use finer sandpaper to avoid densifying the wood and limiting its ability to absorb the oil. New, smooth, planed or finely pre-sanded wood should be coarsely sanded to ensure oil absorption. Dust carefully after sanding.

2- 1st coat:

To ensure good penetration of the oil, it is recommended to dilute it with at least 20% turpentine on dense wood, not very absorbent and rich in tannins, like oak or chestnut.

Manual application: Apply the oil evenly with a spalter, a short nap roller, a cloth, or a sponge. Wait 10 to 20 minutes before rubbing thoroughly with a lint-free cloth until a uniform satin finish is achieved.

Machine application: Apply oil with a short nap roller. Wait 10 to 20 minutes, then wipe evenly with a waxing machine to penetrate the oil until a satin finish is achieved. Change the pad once it is saturated.

While polishing, remove any excess oil that may cause poor drying or a sticky surface. Tockay Hard Oil must penetrate the wood completely, it must not form any film on the wood.

3- Sanding between the 2 coats (optional):

An intermediate sanding between the 2 coats is necessary when the wood fibers rise after the first coat. Sand in the direction of the wood fibers (100-120 grain), then remove dust.

4- 2nd coat:

Apply a new coat in the same way as for the first coat. Do not dilute the product.

5- Wax treatment:

If oiled floors generally do not require wax treatment, it is however possible to improve their shine with Carnauba wax emulsion. It is applied after a minimum of 48 hours of drying: dilute 1 part emulsion with 1 part water. Apply evenly and thinly, then let dry and polish as needed.

TINT

The product can be tinted with any Tockay pigment. For examples, see our “Pigments and Oil” color chart. Mix the pigments in a small amount of oil until a lump-free paste is formed, then add to the main mix. Pigments can be mixed with each other. Alternatively, the product can be tinted, in any ratio, with oil paint.

DILUTION

Hard oil can be diluted with turpentine.

DRYING

Dry and recoatable after about 24 hours at 20°C and about 60% humidity (48 hours for high tannin woods like oak or chestnut). Cold temperatures, higher humidity and tannin-rich woods can significantly extend the drying time. Protect the treated surface from water until the final hardness is reached (about 4 weeks).

MAINTENANCE

The surface must be re-oiled as soon as it becomes absorbent again, and in any case, as soon as gray spots start to appear.

The level of absorption can be assessed by wiping the surface wet. If the surface becomes darker, re-lubrication is necessary. To do this, reapply the product as described above. Very stubborn dirt can be removed beforehand with a scouring pad, an abrasive cloth or sandpaper (100 grain).

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

– Protect the treated surface from water for the first 4 weeks

– Sweep/vacuum with a soft broom or a vacuum cleaner equipped with a raised floor brush

– Never wipe with hot water; use lukewarm water only

– Wipe only with a slightly damp cloth!

– Use only a soft cotton cloth

– Do not use microfiber cloths that can remove oil

– Wipe up spills immediately, do not let them dry before taking action

– To maintain/restore shine, add Carnauba wax emulsion to the cleaning solution

– Only if necessary, clean with Marseille soap; use sparingly

CLEANING OF TOOLS

Clean immediately after use with turpentine, then with Marseille soap.
