Description

Lime paint is not well known: its surface is often mistakenly thought to be sensitive and powdery. However, Tockay granular lime paint is wipe resistant and provides a hard, solid surface. This paint is made of marble powder and is free of synthetic products. It is naturally antifungal, making it ideal for wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. Ready to use, it can be applied with a brush or a roller when not tinted. The use of a brush is recommended as soon as the paint is pigmented. Natural lime paint – untinted or lightly pigmented – can also be applied outdoors.

Application

When using the product, the complete product information must be observed.

PRODUCT

Fine plaster-like effect due to its composition of fine marble sand (0.5 mm grain). Allows slight structural differences on the surface to be evened out; fine pores and cracks can be filled. For interior use, suitable for intermediate and final coats. Suitable for exterior use as an intermediate coat.

SUITABLE INTERIOR SURFACES

Untreated mineral plaster, concrete, stone, masonry, gypsum plasterboard, gypsum fibre board, non-woven paper, all Tockay wall paints and plasters, matte and absorbent synthetic resin dispersion paints (test a small area first).

SUITABLE EXTERIOR SURFACES

Untreated mineral surfaces, weather-resistant coatings, concrete, stone. Do not use on composite thermal insulation systems.

UNSUITABLE SURFACES

Wood, wood-based materials, natural resin dispersion paints, oil-based paints, plastic surfaces, glue slurries, glossy, non-absorbent paints, permanently wet surfaces.

RECOMMENDED TOOLS

Facade or ceiling brushes of natural bristles as well as good quality rollers (medium length bristles). Can also be applied with an airless spray gun (minimum air pressure: 200 bar)

UNIFORMITY OF SURFACES

The surface must be uniformly absorbent, solid and sound, clean, degreased and free of any color stains that may stand out.

On surfaces with differences in structure and absorption, it is possible to create different degrees of gloss or, in the case of tinted paint, to vary the intensity of the color. A higher gloss can be achieved on surfaces with low absorption.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Apply a coat of casein primer on absorbent surfaces such as plaster, concrete, gypsum board, old emulsion paint. Let dry completely.

APPLICATION CONDITIONS

Do not apply at temperatures below 8°C. Avoid direct sunlight, drafts, dirt and surface temperatures below 8°C and above 25°C. Avoid drying too quickly. Low temperatures and high humidity in the air or building can create a higher gloss. At low temperatures, apply the paint as thinly as possible, without diluting it.

Mix the lime paint well. Clean up any spills with water immediately. To cover the surface well, 2 coats are necessary. Use 3 coats if the surface is very structured or with different colors. Do not cover dark and high contrast surfaces with only one coat of paint; thicker coats can damage the surface! Allow previous coats to dry completely before applying a new one. Stir the paint occasionally while working.

***Note: Wet paint remains translucent during application but becomes completely opaque when dry.

DILUTION

Use undiluted paint or paint diluted with 5 to 10% water, as needed. Choose the dilution that facilitates the application of the paint on the surface.

APPLICATION

We recommend applying the lime paint with a brush, using criss-cross strokes. Two coats are generally necessary to obtain a good result.

White lime paints can also be rolled on slightly absorbent surfaces. Work with the roller quickly and “wet on wet” by criss-crossing the roller, then roll the surface in one direction. It is necessary to test the application of the paint with a roller beforehand.

**Do not roll tinted lime paints!

Can be applied with an airless spray gun; test report available from Kreidezeit.

WATERPROOFING OF FACADES

For facade surfaces, we recommend waterproofing with a 2% solution of Marseille soap. To do this, dissolve 20g of soap flakes in 1 litre of hot water. It is important to avoid a higher concentration. For an optimal hydrophobic effect, apply the soap solution to the dried lime paint as soon as possible, at the latest after 24 hours. Apply this solution thinly and evenly from bottom to top. Do not roll! The application can be repeated after drying. Tinted lime paint may show characteristic cloudy effects, so it is necessary to test beforehand. (See the technical sheet Protection of lime plasters and paints).

REPAIR / RENOVATION

To renovate or obtain different or intermediate appearances and textures, lime paint and granular lime paint can both be covered. They can therefore also be painted on top of each other, in an arbitrary alternating manner.

Lime paint and granular lime paint can also be mixed, regardless of their ratio.

Lime paint can be covered with vegetable milk paint, clay paint or tempera paint, provided it has been previously covered with casein primer.

TINT

Tockay lime paints can be tinted with all Tockay pigments.

– Interior: Maximum 100g of pigment with 1L of paint (tone A)

– Exterior: Maximum 100g of pigment with 1L of paint (tone B)

To tint, see our Tockay color chart or our printed versions available by appointment.

Form a smooth, lump-free paste by mixing the pigments with a little water, then mix with the paint.

Pigments can be mixed in any ratio.  Pigmenting the paint can reduce the storage life of the paint, so it is advisable to use it as soon as possible. Paint tinted with ultramarine pigments should be used within 12 hours.

DRYING

Recoatable after about 8 hours at a temperature of about 20°C and a humidity of 65%.

Protect the painted surface from sunlight and rain for the first few days and spray a little water from time to time (the water must not run!)

Completely dry and resistant after 28 days. Drying time increases with high humidity and/or low temperature. Sufficient temperate ventilation is essential during the drying process.

CLEANING OF TOOLS

Clean with water immediately after use.

Technical Data

It should be noted that the yield may vary depending on the substrate, the application method and the quality of the surface. Determine exact consumption by testing.

Colour Chart

Choose one of the 72 shades in our color chart and rediscover the forgotten gestures of the craftsman by mixing your own color using Tockay natural dry pigments!

All natural, non-toxic and free of petroleum-based chemicals, our pigments are packaged in powder form and are easily mixed with water and then incorporated into the paint or plaster according to a precise recipe. For GekkkoSOL silicate-based paints, use GekkkoSOL thinner to dilute the pigments.

– Always be sure to remove lumps

– Ultramarine pigments should be used within 12 hours of preparation when mixed with a lime-based product
